Players are eligible for Dual Registration only with Championship Clubs and only if they are outside the top 20 players (financially) of the Super League club's playing squad. Loan players may go to Championship Clubs or to Super League clubs but must go for a minimum of 4 weeks. The deal means that Ainscough and Farrell can play for both the Warriors and Vikings at any time throughout the Season other than Challenge Cup games, providing both players with an opportunity to play First Team Rugby League against senior players in a very competitive Championship side and gain higher-level match experience. Speaking about the Dual Registrations, Chairman Ian Lenagan said: "The deal is good for the individual players, for the Wigan Club and for Widnes whom we hope to see in Super League in the future. The Dual Registrations mean either Shaun or Liam can return intermittently to play for Wigan at any time based upon form or injuries and, the rest of the time, get senior rugby experience with Widnes.” In addition, Ben Davies has joined Widnes under an open-ended Loan Registration providing the promising young Prop Forward with an opportunity to gain senior match action and valuable experience. Ian Lenagan commented further: "Since the Under-20's Competition does not commence until March, that meant that Shaun, Liam and Ben in the next month might only have played in pre-season friendlies with Wigan which is not ideal after their intensive pre-season preparation. They will continue to train with the Wigan First Team squad for the majority of each week and will have their individual game day performances assessed by Wigan staff. This opportunity with Widnes works well for all the parties involved." |
